Conceptual design: Beginning
with the premise that the new generation of wave pools must not just
be another (kiddie pool) attraction in a typical water-park environment
(and to date, unavailable to actually surf in), an assumption has
been made that the sport of surfing deserves much more than that,
and can be supported from its own identity and uniqueness, and
the draw it is capable of creating from both existing surf enthusiasts
and the non surfing public who has an interest in learning more about
the lifestyle and sport, in a more controlled, predictable and safer
atmosphere, at their convenience, while not necessarily having to
rely on natures moods to satisfy their needs and opportunities.
Now that alternative wave generating technologies creating better
quality results are being pursued and proven, this scenario is very
close to fruition.

Our park concept is structured primarily as a semi-private surf club,
which allows surfers to buy a onetime membership fee and pay monthly
dues in order to maintain their member status. We are proposing that
members have unlimited access to surf the wave pool and also have
either exclusive early morning, or late evening hours to surf, with
out the public crowds, or have an exclusive wave to ride at all times,
that is only available to them. Other rewards proposed are express
check-in, the right to use their own equipment, possible board storage
facilities and preferential treatment in seating to special events
like contests and free-surfing exhibitions. In addition, a percentage
of proceeds from private bookings and parties go back into a general
fund to help improve and expand membership benefits and rewards.
The private membership group gives credibility to the park atmosphere
by having surfers usually with more experience performing on a higher
level and utilizing the park and its amenities well beyond the
so called season During the tourist season May 1st thru
September 1st, the public will be allowed to purchase either day passes
to Surf City Texas, or purchase a certain number of wave riding attempts.
During the off season, the public will continue to have certain hours
to surf, just that the public hours will be slightly reduced, with
more emphasis being put on the private member, who will utilize the
park and its accompanying attractions and amenities.
The surf-pool is the center piece and main attraction that not only
has four different take-off spots with for different wave personalities,
but also two large water return flow lagoons that offer safe beach
lined bodies of water that allow kids and other family members and
friends to swim, tube or just cool off out of the surf zones. Surf
City Texas is being designed to be surrounded by a clubhouse, pro-shop
and snack bar, and a combination of surfing and skateboarding related
theme retail stores and two different affordable level restaurants.
The possibilities for special events, private bookings, amateur and
pro contests, music and movie events are unlimited. Phase II will
address a 26 hookup RV park/camping area and a skate-park area as
well. The key to the success of the entire venture relies on three
things: the technology (wave cannons), the pool design (by Donn Leva
and James Fulbright) and the help and support of the local and international
surf community.
