The Dream: I have been an avid gulf coast surfer since '69,
the owner of a local surf shop for the past 17 years and a surfboard
manufacturer for 15 years. It has allowed me to keep my finger on
the pulse of the local surfing community. I've shared waves with most
of you and possess the same love and commitment to surfing as all
of you do. I go to the same extremes and make the same sacrifices,
to be able to continue to surf and keep the stoke alive! We, as gulf
coast surfers, are a hearty bunch. Our assets are extreme commitment,
travel savvy, versatility of being able to ride some of the crummiest,
weakest and most pathetic surfing conditions on planet earth (we may
as well be frank), and most importantly, patience. We all take what
we can get when we can get it and we appreciate each morsel, but it's
just not enough.
So, what do we do? We keep the faith. We travel when we can afford
to. We check the surf cams daily. We study the weather religiously.
We go out on days that wouldn't even be remotely ridable anywhere
else in the world, and we all gamble that the next day that we are
off work...well, there will be something...anything to ride.
Chances are though we were off on Saturday, and the surf was ridable
on Friday, or some other similar scenario. More often than not, the
cards aren't in our favor. We could almost say that, as gulf coast
surfers, we are against all odds. Of course for the beginner, every
day seems like it's head high (usually because they are squatting
for the first year), but even they, after the first year or so, begin
grumbling about the small and inconsistent conditions. A lot of them
just quit and sell off their equipment. They get all stoked on surfing
and then realize they hardly ever get much of a chance to practice!
I've seen a lot of the veterans give it up, due to their family and
work commitments conflicting with our fickle surf conditions. They
eventually just lose interest too. O.K. what do we do... move to California
or Hawaii or some place where the waves are better? The cost of living
is out of control, and so are the crowds in the line-up. No thank
you.
We all have roots here. This is our home. Here, we have a low cost
of living in comparison to most other surf destinations, unless we
want to become ex-patriots and move it all down to some third world
country. We are staying! Right? We get occasional surf here, usually
with warm water and a sandy bottom that is nice and safe...but still
the supply and demand scales are extremely tipped, and not in our
favor. I have a dream that we can solve all this. My dream is risky.
My dream has never been done. My dream is not cheap. The dream is
to be able to surf perfect waves, morning, noon, and/or night, 7 days
a week, and 360 days a year, without having to relocate or travel!.
Oh yeah, one more thing...my dream is a one man/one wave dream...one
where you won't get snaked by some wannabe super-star, who's never
been taught respect or proper wave etiquette. I would be
willing to pay for such a fantasy if it did, in fact, exist. Hell,
I already spend $3,000.00, once a year, to go on a one week trip to
a surf resort in Fiji, and guess what? One week is such a short window,
and usually about all the time hard working folks can take off at
once, you still never know what you are going to get. Sure, I have
caught it great. It's also been flat, crappy, too windy, or even worse...I
get raked across a live reef lurking about 12 inches below the surface,
because I don't have my act together enough, due to the fact that
I hardly ever get the chance to surf back home. Don't forget, I live
4 blocks from the beach, monitor conditions constantly, and live to
surf! So, I have decided to pursue this dream of mine, and risk my
savings and reputation on it's fruition.
For the past 7 months I have pursued designing, building and opening
an exclusive, upscale surf park, capable of creating solid waves in
the 5-8' range every 30-60 seconds (no bulls#*t). I have done research,
compared technologies, traveled, networked, attended waterpark trade
shows, done case studies on various properties, seeked legal advice...in
other words, I've done my homework. In my opinion, new patented technology
called "wave cannons", invented by Virginia surfers Richard
Carnahan and Troy Kight , can produce such a scenario. I have recently
formed the company, Surf City Texas,L.L.C. and have negotiated the
purchase of exclusive licensing rights to build, sell and use wave
cannon technology in Texas. It will take most of the same assets we
already possess as gulf surfers (extreme commitment, patience, etc.),
coupled with solid investment capital, to make this dream a reality.
A gathering of the tribe is in order.
The Company: Surf City Texas,L.L.C.
was formed for the sole purpose of making this concept a reality.
We are seeking energetic, enthusiastic, and innovative thinkers
to become investors/company members. You must desire to play an
integral part in making company decisions and offer positive input.
You must be willing to play an active role in making this project
a success. You must believe enough in this project to be willing
to offer both time and investment capital. You must have the desire
to be an owner of your own wave pool, with the convenience of surfing
anytime it suits you! Maybe you already have a successful business
that would fit nicely into this theme. You could be a land owner
or real estate developer. You may be a restaurateur, a pool builder
or a local contractor. You might just be someone who carefully weighs
risk versus rewards and sees the upside to getting in early on this
venture... whatever your motives or desires may be, we are ready
to listen with an open mind. Last but not least, you should be a
surfer and share the same passion and dream as we do.
The Concept: (Keep in mind that
the following info is just a concept, and is subject to changes)
A semi-private surfing club primarily catering to members only and
operating year round. The wave park will be open to the public during
the peak season (May through Aug.) during most hours of the day,
with designated times reserved
exclusively for members and private parties. During the off season
(Sept. through April)public hours will be reduced, with more hours
being available to private members. Again, certain hours are reserved
for membersonly and private gatherings. Keep in mind that members
will be allowed to surf at all times, except of course during special
events. Members will also be allowed to ride their own equipment.
Due to liability concerns, the public might be required to ride
softboards. Also, be aware that the waves produced will be much
better than the ones we currently grovel for, and be available every
day! In addition, the size, direction and intensity of the waves
are easily manipulated up or down, according to the participants
abilities and desires, with a simple computer program!
The wave generated with this new technology is dubbed as a more
affordable, larger, safer (breaks in deeper water) and more energy
efficient one than the current ones like Typhoon Lagoon, for example,
produce. It also offers a longer ride, which is most peoples gripe
about what's already out there. The surf pool with it's adjoining
beach and clubhouse is only one facet, but the central theme of
Surf City Texas. Our vision of the entire project includes, among
other things, a restaurant, concessions and retail. Specifics relating
to other phases of Surf City Texas will be forthcoming. We are pursuing
a plot of land large enough to accommodate expansion. The most important
aspect is obtaining a strong, core membership group that will utilize
and support the surf pool year round. Once that phase is completed
and deemed successful, we will have made history. Expanding upon
it will be inevitable.
Club membership: This is the holy
grail...this is the foundation. This is where it all comes down.
The company members are required to put up much more money than
the club members, take a much larger risk, and put all the time
and effort in this project that it takes to get it up and running.
That's a lot to bite off and chew. It's still not enough. We need
you. This project has risk written all over it. We are traveling
in uncharted waters. There is no historical data that supports this
type of venture. Sure, we are surfers. Our passion for surfing and
this project runs deep, but to a loan officer, or an investor who
doesn't surf...very very risky proposal that they just don't get.
Now this is very important. They want to see whether or not the
local surfing community will even support it. They also question
whether or not surfing is popular enough or interesting enough to
attract the general public, be a benefit to the community, or if
other businesses will want to build around it, like restaurants
and retail, etc.. Having a solid surf group, committed in advance
to purchasing a membership, will show other interested parties and
investors that we are unified as a group and believe in it's success.
Becoming a member will be an honor, a privilege, something to be
very proud of, and something to protect and take care of. Not every
surfer will be able to afford a membership, but no other surf club
in existence will have what we will... a million dollar wave pool
that we can surf in at our leisure! We still have to study other
private club's membership fees, as well as existing wave pool fees
and other considerations before we can determine the membership
fee, but that amount is coming soon. It is my hope that our initial
club membership will be at least 200 strong. I have compiled a list
of friends and surfers that I am personally inviting to join me
in this venture as either a company member, or a club member. Go
to www.surfspecialties.com/sctlist.htm to view the list. If your
name is on the list, and you are interested in becoming a member,
I ask one more thing of you. Find one other person who is not already
on the list, that you know and shares the same vision, that will
also become a member. By doing so, you will get a substantial deduction
on your membership fee. Then, if your referral does the same thing,
he/she will get the deduction also, and so on, and so forth. I personally
know each and every one of you on the list and sincerely hope that
you all join me in this noble cause. If your name is not on the
list, and you share the same dream as we do, I invite you to come
on board. Please e-mail me at surfpics@surfspecialties.com with
your name and address. I would be stoked to hear from you and include
you.
Summary: There is a lot more that
I could expand on, like the technology itself, the potential land
sites, project costs, the various phases, the people already involved,
etc... I can elaborate on all that if and when you choose to come
on board. The bottom line is that I believe with every cell in my
body in the success of this project. I have from the start. It is
a shame that a local developer like a Fertitta, or a Moody are not
as passionate about surfing as I am and we are, because they are
certainly better men than I to pull this project off in the grand
scale that it deserves. It is my hope that they, or someone like
them, will see the potential of this and get behind us. Having said
that, I will continue to move forward until this thing becomes a
reality, or I run out of funds and interest. The people that are
already involved in this with me all share the same passion and
dream. However far fetched this concept may sound to many of you
out there, it is the future. I've already heard more than once,
"I've never had the dream to ride artificial waves". In
other words, they could be implying that it is compromising the
soul of real surfing. You know...man pitted against mother ocean,
and all that? Well, the ocean is not going anywhere any time soon.
You can always choose to surf in the gulf when it suits you and
the waves are up. A large part of the allure of surfing has always
been the search, the challenges and variations that the ocean offers
us, and the surfers' continuous relationship with nature. Man will
never be able to fully reproduce the essence of surfing any more
than Hollywood would ever be able to capture the feeling. This is
just a viable and exciting option. Consider this as a surfing gym,
of sorts, that hones your skills and increases your stamina for
that next globetrotting adventure. With the ability to change the
speed and direction of the wave, this technology can continue to
offer challenge too. Theoretically, each wave can be fired differently.
I have also heard, "Hey man, surfing's free. I'm not going
to pay to surf". Well, to that I say we have been all along,
in the form of numerous sacrifices, compromises, and substantial
travel costs in the search for ridable surf. If you want to surf
at your convenience, and you are able to surf more frequently than
you have ever imagined, and in better conditions than you already
get...how much would that be worth to you? How many of you out there
are like me and seem to get sinus infections quite often from surfing
during/after rainstorms, or whatever? How many times have you wasted
valuable time and gas to drive to the beach, only to be greeted
by sub-standard conditions, then turn around and drive back home?
We are all in this together! This is about all of us. It's going
to take all of us. This is way bigger than me, or anything I could
ever accomplish alone. The end result will be enjoyed and shared
by the entire gulf coast surfing community. If it's ever been needed
anywhere, it's here along the gulf coast! The inventor has the same
passion and drive as I have, and we both want only one thing...to
see this thing get built. The proof is in the pudding. Our next
step is to build an exact (1''=1') scale model of the pool, complete
with peeling waves. It is time to gather the tribe for one big push.
Let's do this thing. We deserve it! It can be done if we all work
together. It will be done. When this grand project is completed,
that first wave fires off, and the deafening sound of 300 hoots
fills the air, buy me a beer! James Fulbright
